Amoke Chidera is the current President of the Faculty of Art Student Association [FASA] - University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is a student of the department of English and Literary Studies. As the leader of the student of the Art and humanities, UNN, he is of the view that the vision the Art Students set aside for themselves,
in the nearest future, speaking on the aspect of their disciplines, is less, compare to what ART it self entails. Below, you would find his pieces which he posted on his Facebook profile on February 2, 2019 - He writes;
"Something peculiar with students in the humanities is the fact that our mindsets have been narrowed to thinking that the greatest achievement in the field is becoming a member of the feared academia; that is, we have no use to the practical society rather than teaching and teaching ART, and finally becoming PROFESSORS.
Art is living, Art is life and Art is human. This assertion gives evidence to the knowledge that from your very entry into the world, till the very last day you transcend to the world beyond, and even there after, Art is inevitable. Art cuts across all fields of life, including science, where as, science is just science, but we have been defeated to accepting that science is superior to the humanities.
The discrepancy has been made such that it seems as though life has more need for science than Art, even when man existed , grew and developed in the absence of science; meanwhile the aboriginal man would have lived a boring life, if he lives at all.
It's not the boast that sets me off, it is its acceptance. Art is more performative and practical than science, but in the classrooms, we are not told. We ought to grow ourselves, we ought to disband this limit to reclaim our Place.
After four years of schooling in the university, the science student is hunted with the zeal to remain in the field and make a brand of himself through what he's got, but the Art student resorts to living under the mercy of employers anywhere; within or outside his field who will put them under the shackles of the quest for internal promotion, where as, an English and literature student after four years of thorough learning Can make a brand of himself in his field, in the likes of Achebe and Soyinka, the theater artist can shook the world with his talent, same with the archaeologist, fine and applied artist in the likes of El Anatsui, these And the rest of the humanities not mentioned. All these happens because, we are much engrossed in taking in the knowledge and passing exams than practicing It.
In my view Students in the humanities should be more engrossed in fresh innovations, pushing towards global dominance and promotion, rather than being just contended with one's work place and subsequent promotions."
Hmm...interesting! Now this argument has always been since only God knows when.
ReplyDeleteLol...you can say that again
DeleteChidera, i understand that you seem to be making a point of how some art courses are sidelined, but I don't accept using the reason of how 'more important' art is, to drive home this point.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm saying is that if you see art and science has two key intertwined parts that are very much dependent, one on the other to make life balanced; rather than some different unrelated subjects, you wouldn't place more importance on any one of the two.
So the negligence of arts by some persons or groups in our society, in my own view is due to their own personal perspectives.
This is appreciated Lucy.
